Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)

Intrauterine insemination, more commonly referred to as IUI, is a minimally invasive fertility treatment designed to increase the chances of conception for couples and individuals. Ideal for addressing mild male factor infertility, unexplained infertility, or for use with donor sperm, IUI offers a cost-effective and less invasive alternative to more advanced fertility treatments.

At Radiance Fertility, we’re proud to offer personalized IUI tailored to your unique needs. Our board-certified physician, Dr. Katari and state-of-the-art facility ensure a supportive and efficient environment for your journey to parenthood.

How Does IUI Treatment Work?

IUI works by placing sperm directly into the uterus, increasing the chances of fertilization.

During an intrauterine insemination procedure, the male partner or a donor  provides a semen sample. The semen sample is then processed in a laboratory, where the healthiest and most active sperm are selected for the procedure. This process, known as sperm washing, removes any impurities or non-motile sperm, increasing the chances of a successful pregnancy.

Once the sperm is prepared, the IUI procedure is performed. The female partner lies on an examination table, similar to a regular gynecological exam. The washed sperm is then inserted into the uterus using a thin, flexible catheter, which is gently guided through the cervix. This process is usually painless and does not require anesthesia.

The goal of the IUI procedure is to improve the chances of fertilization by bringing the sperm closer to the eggs. By bypassing the cervix and placing the sperm directly into the uterus, IUI reduces the distance the sperm needs to travel to reach the fallopian tubes, where fertilization typically occurs. This can be particularly helpful in cases where the male partner has low sperm count or motility issues.

IUI can also be combined with ovulation induction medications to further enhance the chances of success. These medications stimulate the ovaries to produce more eggs, increasing the likelihood of fertilization.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can I expect during and after an IUI procedure?

IUI is a quick, minimally invasive procedure that typically takes less than 10 minutes. The sperm is placed into the uterus using a thin catheter, which causes little to no discomfort. Most patients can resume daily activities immediately after. Mild cramping or spotting may occur, but these symptoms usually subside quickly. About two weeks after the procedure, a pregnancy test can determine its success. Dr. Katari will provide guidance and answer questions to ensure you feel prepared every step of the way.

How successful is IUI compared to other fertility treatments?

IUI success rates depend on factors like age, infertility diagnosis, and sperm quality. On average, IUI offers success rates of 10-15% per cycle for individuals under 35, with slightly lower rates for older patients. While it is less effective than advanced treatments like IVF , IUI is less invasive, more affordable, and often a good first step in fertility care. Dr. Katari can help you assess how IUI fits into your overall fertility journey and whether it’s the best option for you.
